As offices change and develop, office buildings are becoming more and more expected to have not only high environmental performance but also flexibility, technological features and well-being of employees. Foster + Partners’ The Edge represents all these characteristics, as it offers a workplace which combines intelligent building technologies and sustainability of architectural design. The project is located in the Zuidas business area of Amsterdam and offers highly flexible office space where light, interaction and energy efficiency define the daily life of its occupants.
The building is organized around the large atrium which becomes the social and environmental core of the building. It allows bringing the natural daylight to the center of the building and makes the interaction of employees from different floors possible.

The floors within the office have been designed to offer maximum flexibility that allows the workstations to be flexible enough to cater to the evolving requirements of the organization. The large floor plates have been designed to accommodate different work styles, from collaborative spaces for teamwork to quiet spaces for concentration.
Large glazed surfaces help to maximize natural light and offer panoramic views of Amsterdam. On the other hand, the façade design ensures that there is controlled solar gain without compromising on energy performance.

The technology has been completely incorporated in the architectural design of the building to enable it to function effectively and improve the experience of the user. The intelligent systems always check the environmental factors and are able to assist in controlling the lighting, heating, cooling, and energy usage in the workplace.
There is also the use of passive design techniques such as the building orientation, high-performance glazing, and natural daylighting to improve the environmental performance of the building.
Landscaped terraces and outdoor spaces extend the workplace beyond the office interior© Foster + Partners
Landscape plays a significant role in the working environment. Outdoor terraces and landscaped areas are spaces where meetings can take place and people can relax in the natural environment. Landscape acts as a buffer to the building’s modern architecture, while at the same time encouraging biodiversity.
Landscape and the building’s interior spaces are brought together to create a connection between the two spaces.
