The architecture of health care facilities is now required to not only facilitate state-of-the-art treatments but also scientific research and patient well-being in settings that facilitate healing. Foster + Partners’ Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre takes up this challenge by providing a comprehensive medical campus in Cairo that integrates clinical services, research laboratories, and educational facilities into a landscape-led context. Commissioned by the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Foundation, this project strives to create one of the leading centres for cardiovascular treatment in the region as well as an inviting setting for patients, their families, doctors, and scientists.
Instead of housing all of the facilities in a single massive building, the complex is designed as a series of connected pavilions located in landscaped courtyards and gardens.

The design prioritizes the welfare of patients through its architectural approach. Courtyard gardens bring natural light and greenery into the heart of the campus, while covered walkways allow easy passage between the buildings owing to the climatic conditions of Cairo. The gardens are designed not only for relaxation but also as a place of contemplation, in addition to the presence of medical facilities.
Natural light is incorporated into the buildings to ensure bright and cheerful interiors, thus minimizing reliance on artificial light. The planning of the building is flexible enough to cater to any future development of health care systems.

Apart from the clinical applications, the project has incorporated research laboratories, educational centers, and spaces that foster innovation and knowledge exchange. The consolidation of treatment, research, and education into one campus facilitates closer collaboration among the medical professionals while fulfilling the objectives of the foundation that aim at improving heart health.
Environmental performance is integrated in the design through passive climate-responsive measures, energy-efficient building systems, and landscaping. The building orientation, shaded facades, and naturally ventilated public spaces help minimize the heat gains while creating climatically responsive environments.

The Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre is Foster + Partners’ vision for the future of architecture in healthcare, in which excellent medicine is made possible through intelligent architecture, sustainability, and an intimate relationship with nature. The project creates a medical campus through the use of interconnected pavilions, healing gardens, flexible clinical spaces, and research and educational facilities.
Not just a hospital, the development sets a new precedent for healthcare architecture in the region by showing how architecture can help heal, discover science, and benefit the community.
