Buildings in sensitive natural settings have an additional task of enriching people’s perception of the landscape through their architectural design, which respects the ecology of the area. The Centre for Coastal Nature, Sport & Fishing, designed by 3XN, is supposed to serve as an entrance to the coastal landscape of Denmark and to provide for the recreation, educational, and community activities in a building that responds to the setting of the site. Situated on the periphery of the Wadden Sea area, the project becomes a destination for experiencing nature through architecture that integrates with the landscape.
The form of the building represents the dynamics of the coastline and the sea through the dynamic profile of the structure. The modelled roof and timber cladding give the building a strong identity while allowing it to blend into the surroundings. The large glazed surfaces provide unobstructed views of the coastline from the interior of the building.

Within, the building is arranged as an adaptable public space to host exhibitions, educational programs, community events, and other activities relating to coastal ecology and sport fishing. Open pathways allow visitors to flow freely within the building, while at the same time being able to see the surrounding landscape. Large gathering areas provide space for learning and socializing, turning the center into a year-round place for residents and tourists alike.
The architecture of the building stresses openness and adaptability in order to serve a wide range of activities while adapting to changing needs of the community. Carefully chosen natural materials help to stress the connection to the coastal landscape, providing a warm atmosphere inside the building.

Landscape plays an important part in the project’s concept as outdoor spaces become a continuation of the building’s experience. Paths, viewing platforms, and recreational areas link the centre with the coastline, allowing the exploration of the area’s unique natural landscape while supporting outdoor activities all year round. The close relationship of architecture and landscape makes it possible for the building to be not only a destination but also the beginning of the journey into the local coastal landscape.
Responsibility towards the environment is the key component of the project as it takes place in a sensitive way with the help of careful siting and integration with the landscape as well as passive design strategies that respond to the local climate. In this way, the building manages to minimize its impact on the environment and maximize the possibilities for education and recreation.
The Centre for Coastal Nature, Sport & Fishing is another example of 3XN’s approach to designing civic buildings that combine architecture, landscape, and community. With its sculptural form, flexible public spaces, and close link with the Danish coastline, the project becomes a friendly destination celebrating nature and encouraging people to learn about it.
