Apart from being a mode of transportation, the infrastructure in the dense urban environment can serve a number of other functions. The Central Crossing by Foster + Partners transforms an underground pedestrian passage underneath the Central district of Hong Kong into a civic infrastructure that enhances not only the connectivity but also the user experience. Connecting the key commercial buildings, transportation nodes, and streets, the infrastructure creates a comfortable space that allows free movement in one of the busiest financial centers of the world.
Apart from providing an innovative underground passage, the scheme uses open spaces that facilitate visibility and navigability. The high ceiling, spaciousness of passages, and good entrance points allow a smooth transition from the above-ground space to the underground passage. The materials, detailing, and lighting in the passage create a bright and welcoming environment for the visitors.

The design of the bridge has been done keeping in mind the number of pedestrians who use the central area every day. This has been done in order to make sure that the needs of the pedestrians are catered to while ensuring that the atmosphere is comfortable. Sightlines have made it easy for users to orient themselves as they travel from the transport nodes to the retail zones and then to the streets surrounding the area. The inclusion of retail zones in the concourse makes the route livelier without making it difficult for pedestrians to move about. Accessibility has been an important aspect of the design process.
Materiality and environmental quality are important aspects that play a significant role in improving the quality of the development. The durable finishes, lighting, and building systems make the interior comfortable despite the intensive use of the space on a daily basis. The architectural language makes the crossing defined by its size and openness while ensuring durability and maintainability. Sustainability is ensured through the efficient environmental systems and pedestrian movements in the city. This can be accomplished through the encouragement of walking and connections to the transport system and other developments.

The Central Crossing project is a definite embodiment of the philosophy followed by Foster + Partners regarding the possibility of making infrastructure an integral part of the public space. The project managed to transform a significant pedestrian path into a civic space by providing ample circulation spaces, an easy navigation system, commercial activities, and architectural design.
Central Crossing not only reflects the philosophy but also emphasizes the connectedness of the city of Hong Kong through an accessible environment that integrates movement, architecture, and the public space.
