There is now increased pressure for corporate headquarters to have a presence in the city that goes beyond serving the organizations themselves. The new Safra National Bank headquarters building designed by Foster + Partners addresses this changing requirement by creating a high-end workspace combined with public facilities and landscaped areas in one of the most rapidly developing areas in Miami for commercial purposes. This building will further develop the core of financial activities in the city and create an innovative workplace where openness and flexibility will play important roles.
The building stands on a key location with a direct link to the adjacent pedestrian network. Unlike an isolated office tower, the building interacts with the street thanks to its podium containing retail areas, public facilities, and large-scale landscaped areas. Above, a slender tower rises with the proper proportions designed for Miami’s subtropical climate. Using advanced glazing and shading systems helps to reduce the heat while allowing maximum natural light and creating great views over Biscayne Bay and the city.

In terms of the layout of the headquarters itself, flexible office floor plates are used that can easily adapt to changes in work dynamics. Flexibility, collaboration areas, meeting rooms, executive offices, and amenities help create a functional space for focused as well as collaborative work. Natural light, outdoor views, and high indoor environmental quality add up to a healthy environment inside the building.
The relationship with the landscape is not lost even inside the tower. Planted terraces give opportunities to employees to communicate, collaborate, and take some breaks outside. They also reinforce the connection of architecture with nature and improve the thermal comfort. At ground level, transparent facades, landscaped plazas, and pedestrian routes ensure an active public realm in order to make the headquarters integrated into the daily life of Brickell.

Environmental sustainability is incorporated into the building design through efficient building systems and façades that reduce energy consumption while keeping comfort levels intact. The flexible design will also help to extend the longevity of the building by allowing future workplace adjustments without major structural changes. Combining sustainability and adaptability, the design guarantees the resilience of the headquarters against organizational and urban changes.
The new headquarters of Safra National Bank can be viewed as a modern example of the integration of financial architecture and innovative workplace design into a unique development that at the same time provides opportunities for civic participation and environmental performance. Thanks to an elegant tower building, flexible working spaces, landscape design, and a vibrant public realm, the architects at Foster + Partners have managed to create a headquarters that contributes as much to Miami’s urban tissue as to its organization.
